OpenAI has officially unveiled its own web browser — ChatGPT Atlas, aiming to transform how users interact with the internet. The new product, combining artificial intelligence with traditional browsing, is now available for macOS, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android coming soon.
During the launch event, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described Atlas as “a chance to rethink the very idea of a browser.”
“We haven’t seen a real breakthrough in browsers since the introduction of tabs. Atlas is our attempt to make browsing not only faster — but smarter,” — said Altman.
Atlas is fully integrated with ChatGPT, allowing users to chat with AI directly while browsing — ask questions, summarize text, or complete tasks without switching tabs.
It also features an AI assistant called Operator, capable of booking services, filling out online forms, or creating shopping lists — all within the browser window.
Initially, these features will be available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business users, but OpenAI plans a gradual rollout to everyone.
The launch of Atlas comes amid growing competition among companies embedding AI into browsers.
Google has integrated its Gemini model into Chrome, Perplexity recently introduced Comet AI, Microsoft is advancing its Copilot Mode in Edge, and Atlassian acquired The Browser Company for $610 million.
Analysts note that OpenAI is effectively entering Google’s core territory by merging search, communication, and automation in one platform.
If successful, Atlas could reshape not only the browser market but also the structure of online advertising and search.
Atlas marks OpenAI’s first major consumer product beyond ChatGPT.
Experts see it as a strategic step toward building a full AI ecosystem — uniting search, productivity tools, and commerce.
OpenAI is already testing online shopping, booking integrations, and an “agent mode” that allows AI to act on behalf of users.
