On September 8, 2023, American woman Carrie Edwards was able to guess four out of five main numbers and the Powerball number in the drawing. This victory was made possible by her unusual decision: for the first time, she turned to artificial intelligence for help to choose her numbers.

Carrie, a widow and grandmother, decided to try her luck by playing the lottery online for the first time. As she was thinking about how to choose the numbers, an unusual idea came to her. “So I’m like hey chat…ChatGPT talk to me, talk to me about this $1.7 billion and do you have numbers for me,” she recounted at a press conference. The AI responded, “Carrie, you know it’s all about luck, right?”

Despite the AI’s skeptical response, Edwards received a combination of numbers that she used for the game. She also spent an extra dollar on the Power Play option, which tripled her prize to $150 thousand.

Two days later, the woman received a notification about her winnings. She decided it was a scam.

“I look at my phone and it says ‘please collect your lottery winnings’ and I thought I think it’s a scam, I know I didn’t win,” she recalled.

She still logged into her account, where her win was confirmed. But instead of spending the money on herself, Carrie decided to donate the entire amount to charity.

“I knew I needed to give it all away. It’s a blessing, and I want it to help others,” Edwards said.

She gave the money to three organizations that have a special meaning for her:

  • The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) — a disease that claimed the life of her husband, a firefighter.
  • The Shalom Farms initiative, which fights against food scarcity in the region.
  • The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society fund, which helps military members and their families.

“These three organizations represent healing, service, and community,” Carrie explained. Her action became a prime example of how good fortune can be used for the benefit of others.

Recently, we reported on how artificial intelligence is transforming the job market. A new startup now enables employers and job seekers to communicate without language barriers.
